I heard an encouraging testimony recently and thought I would share it… The story begins with a boy named Ben. He grew up in the poor inner–city of Detroit. His parents divorced when he was eight years old. He and his brother were raised by his mother, who was one of 24 children and had married at the age of 13. Ben was such a poor student that his 5th grade classmates nicknamed him “dummy.” He got into a fight once for being called the “dumbest kid in the class.” The words of his classmates continued to beat him down, and he became a young boy who was totally unmotivated, failing in school, had a horribly low self-esteem and a terrible temper. It looked like the deck was stacked against him. But fortunately for Ben, there was somebody at home giving him a very different message. It was his mother. And even though she only had a 3rd grade education herself, she continued to tell her son that he was smart, loved and that God had great plans for him. She taught him to pray. She convinced him to spend his afternoon in the library and to write two book reports every week and turn them into her. Her unconditional love and encouragement started to have an effect. By 7th grade, he was at the top of his class. What a vessel she was for God! When he graduated from high school, he got a scholarship to Yale and went on to medical school at the University of Michigan. He first gained recognition in 1987 when he became the first surgeon ever to successfully separate Siamese twins at the back of the head.

They called him the dumbest in his class. God had other plans. Years later, somebody asked him why his mother still lived with him, even after he was married and had children of his own. And he said, “You don’t understand. If it weren’t for that woman, I wouldn’t be living. I honor her. She earned this”… While I don’t believe we earn God’s love, it would seem the sacrifices made by this praying momma and her unconditional love is a greater reflection of our God.

And while none of us grew up in a perfect home, here’s the great news: God offers a love that is perfect and truly unconditional, and is the basis for the relationship that we have and live out with Him. As you are celebrating and honoring Mother’s Day, or honoring the memory of mothers, may the hand of God be upon you. It is my vision that through your prayers and God’s generosity, NewVision FM will continue to be the vessel that God uses to shine His light. To speak life and to be a bold witness in these last days speaking truth in love. Our acceptance of Him does not depend on our performance! It depends on Jesus. Happy Mother’s Day to all of you praying Mommas!!
